Manisan Hike on Ganghwa Island: 1,004 Stairs to Chamseongdan

On Ganghwa Island, the Manisan hike runs from the ticket office up the 1004 Stairs route — a mix of stone and wooden steps — to Chamseongdan, a stacked-stone altar said to date to Dangun and Korea’s founding myth. The summit sits at 472 metres, the round trip covers about 4.5 km, and most hikers finish in 2.5 to 3 hours. I did it in just under two at a steady pace.

Getting There

The trailhead address is 인천광역시 강화군 화도면 상방리 산35 (Sangbang-ri San-35, Hwado-myeon, Ganghwa-gun, Incheon). The trailhead itself is the Manisan ticket office (마니산 매표소, maepyoso). Paste either form into Naver Map or KakaoMap; both apps handle the location cleanly, while Google Maps tends to drop pins poorly for Korean addresses.

Driving in, you pass a GS25 with a parking lot in front of it. That lot is the furthest from the entrance. Keep going past it; there are more spaces deeper in, much closer to the ticket office. Parking is free.

Entry is ₩2,000 per adult, bought at the ticket office before you start the trail.

Trail Guide

From the ticket office, the first ten minutes are flat asphalt. You pass a plaza on the right with a restroom; this is the last restroom on the trail, so use it. Past the plaza the road keeps climbing gently until you reach Manisan Gidowon (마니산 기도원), a prayer retreat, and from there the wooden stair route begins.

The lower stairs are steady and well maintained. At roughly the two-thirds mark the gradient steepens sharply and the riser height jumps. When you turn around in this section, the view opens out across the ridges of Ganghwa. The full ascent takes about an hour at a brisk pace; budget 1.5 hours if you stop for photos or catch your breath on the steep upper section.

Mid-April, a Monday. The cherry blossoms around the ticket office were still out and the weather was clear when I started up the stairs. Even on a weekday the trail had a steady flow of people, which tracks for one of the BAC 100 (Black Yak’s 100 Famous Mountains list). A hot bar and a Gatorade from the GS25 in the parking area finished the day for me before the drive back.

Chamseongdan and the Summit

Chamseongdan (참성단) is what most hikers come for, even though it is not the highest point. It is a stacked-stone altar listed as Historic Site No. 136, traditionally attributed to Dangun, Korea’s legendary founder. The national Gaecheonjeol (개천절, National Foundation Day, 3 October) sky ritual is held here, and the torch for the National Sports Festival is lit at this altar.

On the platform stands a single old tree, the Ganghwa Chamseongdan Sosanamu (강화 참성단 소사나무) — a Korean hornbeam (Carpinus turczaninovii) designated Natural Monument No. 502, roughly 150 years old and about 4.8 m tall. It flowers before its leaves in April and May, so late spring is a good window if you want to catch it in bloom.

The actual summit at 472 metres is a five-minute walk past Chamseongdan and carries the BAC 100 verification marker. The view, though, is better from the altar itself; the foreground drops cleanly toward the sea and the lower hills of Ganghwa spread out below.

Practical Tips

Use the restroom at the plaza near the start. There is not another one between there and the summit.

Korean mountain trails have no bins and no shops on the route. Stock up on water and snacks at the GS25 in the parking area before you head in. The same GS25 doubles as a finish line for the descent.

Watch your knees on the upper section coming down. The riser height in the top third is tall, and those steps are where most people feel it. Trekking poles help if you have them.

Cherry blossom season around the ticket office runs in early to mid-April. For the sosanamu on Chamseongdan, the flowering window is roughly April to May.

Final Thoughts

Manisan is a short, sharp BAC 100 summit on Ganghwa Island, suited for a half-day from Seoul. If you are working through the BAC 100 list, or you want a sea-edge climb without committing to a full day on the ridge, this is the route worth picking. Search 마니산 매표소 in Naver Map, bring ₩2,000 for entry, and start from the ticket office side.
